I have heard, from an unreliable source, that a red light camera ticket costs $450 in Santa Barbara, California. Is that true? (I edit a website about red light cameras, at www.highwayrobbery.net )

cameras.... surely the threat of a hefty fine would deter people from running the red light!
If you dont want to be fined, dont jump the lights!!! Simple as that, or is this just to obvious for you .....

light, your breaking the law and (i hope) you realise that your breaking the law.... therefore you deserve whats coming to you. Sure, in certain circumstances the junction may be badly designed, the timing on the lights may be wrong and in these cases, contest the ticket ..... otherwise pay up, you were in the wrong, not the government!
I guess the cams. are a convienent source of revenue, however they do also function as law enforcement ... maybe you should be campaigning to make it legal to run red lights ... isnt that the american way?

cheap. However one is unlikely to be able to contest them successfully, so they make for a good source of revenue. They have little or nothing to do with safety in the majority of instances. The few RLCs that might be primarily safety related are not profitable by definition, so they tend not to last long.
Greetings and still red light ticket free,

fine zone" has been declared. Also, the ticket goes against the registered owner; if that person wasn`t driving, he has to fink on the person who was or eat the ticket himself.
Since the IIHS is citing studies that show drops in accident rates of 30% or so at intersections using these cameras, with beneficial spillover effects to other intersections in cities using the cameras, getting rid of them is unlikely in the foreseeable future.

councils and road departments believe them. They also have polls showing 70-80 percent of city residents, in cities where they`re installed, actually like the things. Like it or not, they`re not going away.

says... often times it is not, so you need to be aware of the situation. The cameras only pay for themselves when people run the light. If the intersection was fixed so that most drivers could avoid running red lights, the cameras would be a money losing proposition and would not be around for long. Red light cameras are usually a good indication of a town that needs money.

says... setting up an intersection. If nothing else they are setting up for a potentially deadly situation simply to be able to make money. be safe from the start. Sometimes all it takes is a simple change in the yellow light timing.

[financial] benefits that "well planned" RLCs have to offer. In recent times, dozens of the dratted things have been installed around town, and some lights are obviously mistimed.
Still free from RLC tix,
