Well, I just hit a deer. So I decided I need more light on country roads. My `91 Integra has fog/driving lights but they go off when I switch to hi beam (DOT idiocy?).
To make your fog/driving light stay on with both lo and hi beams is pretty simple. The switch gets its power off one of the lo beam wires. So all you have to do is pop out the switch with a screwdriver, cut that wire (red/yel in the case of my Acura) and splice it onto the wire that supplies power to the switch`s internal night light (red/blk). Voila! You could be even more clever and take the switch apart and jump the connection. If you don`t have a manual, just use a VOM (meter) or side marker bulb connected to ground to find the right wires. BTW, these are all low-current connections because a relay does the actual switching.
This works really well. I can now see the roadside much better.

the dot rule is that you`re not allowed to have more than four headlamps on at the same time, afaik, so the fog lights need to go when you put on the hi beams

The first time you try driving in fog or heavy snow with your high-beams on you`ll be re-thinking what you did. It very dangerous! The only right way to wire fog lights is with a separate switch, totally independent of any other lights.

No, no, no....the switch is wired to the dashboard light supply (the bulb in the switch itself) so power is available whenever any of the lights are on.
If you don`t want the fog lights on just turn them off. They also go off when you turn your headlights off.
BTW, about this 4 light limit thing with the DOT, my car does NOT run lo and hi beams at the same time.
Another dumb thing the gov`t did to my poor little Integra was force Honda to put in those horrible motorized belts. But I got around that problem by pulling the control module. I have to connect two buckles but getting out is easy, just use both hands, each on a buckle. It`s better than airbags, which would send my pipe thru the back of my throat and make my ears ring permanently.
The gov`t sucks ass.

like my Trans Am. There`s a dash switch for the fog lights, but they`ll only come on if the low beams are on - you can`t override them and only run the fog lights or use them with the high beams.
I know you shouldn`t use them with the high beams 99% of the time, but it`s MY car... plus if I changed them with driving lights, I`d like them to come on with the high beams.
All he`s done is make the fog light switch work without depending on the position of the headlight switch.

Most newer cars do not run four light on high beam, only two for each high and low. Find the wire going to the fog lamps from the low beam side of the headlamp switch. Move it to the high beam side of the switch. I did it on my 2001 Mustang GT and on my 2002 Lincoln LS. With the high beam and the driving light on I still comply with the four light rule.

that with the high beams on, your eyes will be directed far enough down the road that you won`t need the fill close-in from the low beams?

It occurs to me that the reason the fog lights go off when the high beams go on may be that all four of them, together, exceed the DOT limit on the maximum total wattage of lights you`re allowed to have on at one time. I doubt you`d get pulled over for that, though.
A friend of mine did a lot of driving on unlit, rural roads with very little traffic. He had a set of rally lights wired so they came *on* with the high beams, when enabled with a seperate switch. That way when the occasional car did appear, dimming his lights automatically killed the rally lights.

Perhaps it`s not a DOT rule here but rather a limit to the wattage the wiring & circuits can handle. The wire gauge on my car doesn`t look like it can handle many amps.

the beams do not reflect off the water particles of the fog back into the driver`s face (as is the case of High Beams). With the headlamps on High Beam, the Fog Lamps would not help at all.
Now if you were discussing Driving Lights instead of Fog Lamps, this discussion would take on an entirely different track. Driving lamps above certain power levels are illegal in many areas. That is why most (if not all) manufacturers do not install driving lamps on production vehicles.
Driving lights that are suitable for Pro Rallye Events do draw significant amounts of power and therefore should be on a separate fused circuit capable of handling the current draw.

On the ones that do, they`re often pathetic, useless things dimmer than a low-beam headlamp, that illuminate an area about a foot in front of the bumper.

You better go take a look at some of driving lights on some of the new cars on the market if you believe that.

Lights will blind any animal which may make things worse. Use whistle mounted on the cowl or fender. Tony

The deer whistles pretty much have been discredited as an accident preventer. Truckers have found that deer may indeed be spooked by the whistles, but they are just as likely to jump in front of you as away from you. Plus they may have stayed on the side of the road, had then not been spooked.

I read where 95% of all accident happen less than twenty miles from you home. That why I away try to stay more than twenty miles from my place.

yeah, the deer whistles are complete BULLSHIT. most deer hit by cars will run beside the car for about 50 feet, before darting in front of it (it works for them in nature...). so if you see a deer blinded in the headlights, its unlikely to hit you. if you see one running out of the corner of your eye, watch out (this actually happened to me - i was driving faster than he thought, so he hit the side of my civic instead of cutting in front of me - i got deer hair jammed in my molding, but no real damage - scared the crap outta me tho`)

I`ve heard it quoted many times along with the "at less than 35mph" addition. But most people travel mostly city streets and don`t go more than 20 miles from home on a daily basis. So of *course* all their accidents will happen within that range! Always seemed pretty obvious to me... sdl

weird paint on Jet Engines to scare off birds. A deer and / or a Moose will stand in front of you and you`ll hit it, on the treacherous highway up to Sudbury Ontario. A whistle might help.
