I took the head off. Take a look at these pictures and tell me what you think. There are some notches on the pistons from the valves hitting them. I think I can just grind those areas down with a dremel. Don`t tell me I need to replace my pistons please.
The valves don`t appear to be bent. They all seat right when I turn the cam. Maybe the timing wasn`t right? Do you think its possible bad timing caused the valves to hit the pistons just a little off line? I don`t know what to do next. Any advise?
Go to http://www.nitro-net.com/whatilearned to see my engine in pieces. I dedicated this site to this project from here on out. You can see the pistons here.
You can see the piston here: http://www.nitro-net.com/whatilearned/images/spyder% 20engine%20059.jpg notches on my pistons from my valves - 97 Eclipse 2.4 Engine

Jeez, just saw the pictures and you are damned lucky! Yeah sometimes you will smack a valve off a piston because the timing is out, and occasionally, very occasionally, you will be lucky. I think you were lucky Jack.
Smack the engine back together, get the timing spot on, turn it over by hand first (checking for any stiff spots) and then on the starter motor and listen carefully for that clang. If you hear valves hitting pistons, for the love of God stop.
Again, I can`t believe how lucky you are! Good luck with the rebuild

jerryg, me and other members who have approached cannot see the photos in the link you provided. That link seems to hold a webmarketing site. Can you please re-send a proper link so I and other people can have a look at the photos?
