The Porsche 911 is very much a piece of the past.
It is based on a 41 year old idea but is nevertheless alive and kicking.
The latest evolution of this rear-engined car sports a 3.8-litre engine, providing 261kW of pure angry, malevolent power.
The exterior boasts four tailpipes and a return to the 911’s traditional oval headlights while the interior deviates from Porsch purity in favour of unrefined decadence.
In keeping with previous models, the S is comfortably handy with good views forward and back and a light nose that responds to the slightest flick of the steering wheel. It is extremely fast, reaching 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds with a possibility of going up to 290 km/h. Although the tail is heavy, the PASM (Porsche active suspension management) reduces unwanted movements effectively, giving a tauter, more precise drive. The steering is smooth and accurate and the grip is tight.
Without a doubt, driving this car is a special occasion. It is a veritable powerhouse, its force, palpable even at lower speeds, pushing you on from behind.
