With rear wheel drive and the same size tires on the front and back, the rear tires wear faster but I`ve always compensated for that by rotating the tires front to back. With different sized wheels and tires front (8J x 18, 225/40 R 18) and back (8.5J x 18, 255/35 R 18), rotating tires front to back is out of the question. Does the increased width in the back (255 vs. 225) cause them to wear at about the same rate as the narrower front tires or do the back tires still wear out quite a bit faster than the front tires? I`m wondering if I`m going to end up pitching only half-worn front tires because the rears are worn out.

What is wrong with just getting new rears and using the half-worn fronts?
It works for me as well as many other folks. Pete Fagerlin

normal alignment, most people find the inside edge of the rear tires wears fastest, such that they`ll go through two sets of rears for each pair of fronts. /My/ car, however uses up fronts faster than rears, because of the way I have it setup. even if you find yourself in that situation.

worn tires on the front). Understeer, while not a hell of a lot of fun, is rarely scary unless you do something really stupid.

replacing rears before fronts.
I`ve replaced a number of rear tires while using fronts that were only half, or a little bit more, worn and never had a problem, in the wet or in the dry.
I know many folks who do the same.
