Hey folks, Was wondering if any of you had experience with something like the following: I was driving West on the Massachusetts Turnpike today and at the Allston/Brighton booth had to stop to pay a $1 exact change only toll. Threw 4 quarters in the basket, but the Red light at the toll booth didn`t turn Green. Puzzled, I threw another quarter in there for the heck of it, but the light didn`t change. There were no attendants around, and I didn`t want to back up traffic, so I said screw it and kept going.
That being said, am I likely to end up with a ticket in the mail, given that they have cameras at these tollbooths to catch people who don`t pay? Again, their equipment was defective, but I don`t have any way to prove it. I don`t drive through that stretch of highway much so don`t know if their equipment there is problematic. Is it worth writing a pre-emptive letter to whoever`s in charge of that tollbooth, to complain that it didn`t work when I went through? Would hate to get a ticket for no reason...

times. Never got a ticket. There are cameras as well I don`t even wait for it to turn green, toss in the toll and go if the gate is in the up or missing.

toll booth, on the same side of the road. I avoid Boston like the plague, but used to have a job that would require me to drive there frequently. Any tolls I paid were reimbursed by my employer. I would NORMALLY spend a little extra time waiting in the line with the attendant so I could get a receipt for the toll. The ironic thing is, that particular day I decided to pay the toll myself (screw the receipt) as I was in a hurry to get home and the line with the attendant was backed up. I ended up paying the toll with exact change *twice*, and never got a green light. If a ticket was issued, it would have been mailed to my operations manager. I WOULD have heard about it though. Don`t worry about it. Next time you pass through that toll booth, you might want to choose the line with the attendant though. That is the only toll booth I know of that has that particular problem on the Mass. Pike.
On a side issue, I thought the tolls on the Mass. Pike were only supposed to be collected until the Mass. Pike was paid for (like several years go?). -Dave

Hi Dave, Thanks for the help-- much appreciated. I`ve only been up in MA for about a year, but they have recently jacked up tolls on the MassPike by quite a bit. There was a big political hubbub about it but the bottom line was that the state needed $$$ so they raised tolls. My impression is that the Mass state gov is very low on $$$ in general, or so they say...
BTW, really enjoyed your tale about going off that offramp in reverse-- hopefully I`ll never be in your shoes-- wish I knew how to drive like that though... (doubtful that the `89 Corolla will do 50mph in reverse though...)

Hey Dave, FYI: I emailed the Mass Turnpike Authority re. this issue, and they emailed me back promptly saying thanks for the message, that they received my toll and that I am all set. My guess is that this is not the first time that this tollbooth has been brought to their attention... otherwise, they would not have been so quick to say "we received your toll."
